Christian Coigny’s work consists of soft and sensual nudes, spectacular landscapes and skilfully composed still-lifes that surpass graphic purity of composition and elegant play of chiaroscuro.
This systematic use of black and white, the meticulous preparation of the sets and the staging, as well as the special care brought to the lighting have always constituted the “holy trinity” of his photographs.
In Christian Coigny’s studio a wonderful light prevails. The photographer himself makes all of the sets himself by means of nails, planks and mixtures of black and white painting which, by a clever mixing, give his photos a special softness with their shades of grey and hues of dusk.
His refusal to choose artificial lighting puts him in the position of feverishly waiting for the perfect moment, a poetic meeting of the subject and the light filtering from behind a cloud or through a window.
