C+C Photography Gallery presents a new series titled It’s a Sign! by award-winning photographer Vincent Ricardel.
This collection explores the allure of mid-20th century American commercial signage — the bold, luminous beacons that dotted the postwar highways from the late 1950s through the 1980s. In an era of booming car culture, economic optimism, and the rise of roadside economy, signs for gas stations, motels, diners, and fast food chains transformed mundane advertising into vibrant public art.
“These artifacts were not mere commerce,” says Ricardel, “they were populist sculptures, blending graphic design, architecture, and light into ephemeral masterpieces. Today, as many of these signs continue to fade or vanish, I seek to preserve and reinterpret their nostalgic glow, celebrating how functional objects became unintended icons of cultural optimism and visual embrace.”
