Maarten Van den Bossche (Belgium, 1984) first trained as a stage designer in Ghent. He then studied photography in Brussels at the Narafi, the École le Septant Cinq and Sint-Lukas.
Van den Bossche’s background in theater can be noticed in his staged performances. His photography is an almost dreamlike mixture of fact and fiction. The people in these pictures seem to exist outside reality, living in the depth of a forest or an abandoned building. His series The Strength of Weak Ties visualizes the close friendship between the photographer and a puppet. The man ties the puppet’s shoelaces; they celebrate a birthday together, sit on a swing and visit a cemetery. This way, Van den Bossche plays with our understanding of mutual relationships.
