This richly illustrated book of unpublished iconography drawn from the collection of the author, Claude Ribouillault, brings together more than a hundred songs and a notebook of scores. With an erudition often piercing the complicity and sometimes, the tenderness. It isn’t an odyssey without singing. On the seas and the oceans, but also on the rivers, the people on board sing and dance, make up their repertoires, let the instruments travel. Their songs tell about a way of life, a brotherhood that sometimes intersects with those of other closed environments that make up boarding schools, prisons and armies.

From important personal documents brought together over many long years (notebooks of songs, instruments from professional and amateur instrument makers, collecting evidence etc.) Claude Ribouillault questions these repertoires and the way in which they were made, from one group to another (shipwrights, naval seamen, Newfoundlanders etc.), from one language to another, through cross-breeding and creolisation, through the movement of crews and cosmopolitan destiny, but also of the misfortunates carried away  on the slave traders’ ships.
