Boogie Woogie Photography presents at The Loft the exhibition Louis Stettner : Time Capsules. Vanessa Franklin writes:
Louis Stettner (1922-2016) stands as one of the most celebrated photographers of the 20th century. With a career spanning over seven decades, Stettner’s work sings life, weaving together human stories and architectural beauty with an unparalleled elegance.
I believe his work stands out in the photography world due to his ability to con- vey profound human emotions and everyday life with an understated yet powerful authenticity. Stettner’s unique perspective, combined with his master technique, render his photographs timeless. Some of his renowned oblique gaze compositions give a sense of depth and narrative complexity to his subjects. By capturing them from slightly off-center angles, Stettner created images that feel both intimate and dynamic, inviting viewers to explore the nuances within the frame.
I delved in the treasure trove of his Atelier in Paris, preparing for this Time Capsules exhibition with the great support of his beloved wife Janet Stettner, and Isobel Stettner Hoevers, his daughter. I hope this exhibition will be a memorable experience, comprising about twenty silver gelatin prints hand- made by Stettner himself. I sense that each photograph is not just an image, but a story – a moment of beauty and grace.
Louis Stettner’s work continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, offering a rich visual narrative of ur- ban life and human connection. His photographs are held in prestigious Photography collections as well as Fine Arts Museums, including notably: the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum and the Met- ropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Centre Pompidou in Paris; the Tate Modern in London; and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
