Bildhalle : René Burri – Werner Bischof

Preview

Bildhalle opens the new season with a double exhibition of two of the most important figures in Swiss photographic history: René Burri (1933-2014) and Werner Bischof (1916-1954).

For the first time, René Burri’s family is releasing the exclusive vintages and early prints from his estate for sale – including both iconic and previously unknown images. The backs of these carefully preserved prints from the 1950s to 1980s bear witness to the history and breathtaking journeys that not only the photographer but also Burri’s photographs have undergone. The third solo exhibition in the Bildhalle is an expression of the long-standing collaboration between the gallery and the family and reveals the core of René Burri’s oeuvre, which holds true discoveries for all those who believe they are familiar with his work.

Following the highly acclaimed exhibition “Unseen Colour” at the Masi Lugano and the Fotostiftung Winterthur, Bildhalle invites visitors to the Bildhalle showroom to discover the largely unknown color photography of Werner Bischof in dialogue with his iconic black and white images. Four years ago, Marco Bischof and Tania Kuhn came across boxes containing hundreds of glass plate negatives in the archive of the Werner Bischof Estate and thus unearthed a hidden treasure trove of previously unknown color photographs by his father, one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. The original negatives from the period between 1935 and 1954 were then painstakingly restored over the years. The resulting prints lend an unknown dimension to Werner Bischof’s work and reveal a little-known aspect of his oeuvre.

The exhibition runs from 30 August to 16 November 2024.
