Bienne Festival of Photography

Preview

Under the title “Horizons”, the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography invites you this May to immerse yourself in a selection of work by contemporary Swiss and international photographers who propose new ways of representing, conceiving of and narrating the landscape. Each of the 18 exhibitions created for this 28th edition of the festival (including 6 world premieres and 4 Swiss premieres) will offer a reflection on the landscape around us, whose role in our constantly transforming society is increasingly a topic of discussion.

As we do every year, we will be presenting unique projects that have come about thanks to new synergies. For this year’s edition, we are very happy to collaborate with the CAP Prize (the International Prize for Contemporary Africa Photography) in presenting two of the 2024 winners, whose work will be exhibited at the NMB (Nouveau Musée Biel/Neuesmuseum Biel): Tshepiso Moropa will present a series of images inspired by fairy tales of the Tswana people, and Ahmed Khirelsid will make a photographic exploration of his flight from his family home because of the civil war in Sudan. The two exhibitions have been curated by CAP Prize director Benjamin Füglister. We invite you to join us for a guided tour of the exhibition with Benjamin Füglister on May 24 at 2 pm at the NMB.

At the Ancienne Poste/Alte Neumarktpost, the space will be used for a project that emerged from a collaboration with REBL x Leica. At the invitation of Leica Camera, photographer Phil Penman will present a selection of images of Biel/Bienne that he created by going through the streets of the city with his camera over 96 hours this winter. Join us on May 10 starting at 2 pm to celebrate Leica’s anniversary in the midst of Penman’s exhibition. Programme and registration here.

In addition to the course of exhibitions, distributed among ten venues, we will also be offering numerous events over the three and a half weeks of the festival: a discussion between photographer Guillaume Perret and Filmpodium director Andreas Stuck, a performance by Virginie Otth, a literary performance by students at the Institut littéraire suisse/Schweizerisches Literaturinstitut (HKB) in the exhibition of the SNSF Scientific Image Competition, a treasure hunt and numerous guided tours. Our programme is now available online here.
