On the occasion of British Black history Month, this October, Atlas Gallery presents a group exhibition of some of the most famous and era-defining imagess, depicting the historical moments and heroes of the fight against racist ideology and politics on three continents. Borrowing Francis’ poignant image of a Black Triangle unifying communities spread between the UK, America and Africa, the exhibition will focus on some of the key events, portraits, demonstrations, protests, tragedies, struggles and crimes that took place across these regions.
The show is in collaboration with Dr Mark Sealy of Autograph and will include more than 70 works by a group of important international photographers, with a particular focus on rarely seen images of events that took place in the UK.
As Dr Sealy wrote, “when repressed knowledge is allowed a voice, expressed, and then embraced, it critically functions to help us understand that nothing in the past is over and that time and history, when considered through photography, can and will be reworked. Photography, in essence, is our judgement, our jury, and we stand on trial before its all-seeing eye, trapped, framed, and caught awaiting times sentence.”
This is a group show titled “The Black Triangle: Photography of the Civil Rights and anti-racist movements in the UK, USA and South Africa” and includes era-defining images of historical moments and figures of the fight for civil rights, by an international group of photographers:
