Until October 13, the first edition of the ArtCarjat Biennale is being held titled: The portrait: from caricature to photography. It is presented as follows:
Everyone knows the portrait of Rimbaud, who has become a world icon, but few know its author Etienne Carjat (1828-1906), born in Fareins. His native country wishes to pay tribute to the man who was, through caricature and photography, one of the great portraitists of his century. We will restore his place in the context of a 19th century marked by the massification of the illustrated press, then follow his posterity until today where the art of portraiture has continued to diversify in the context of an omnipresence of images and the development of digital technologies.
Etienne Carjat is the tutelary shadow of this biennial. The exhibition highlights his work, that of his many artist friends and also that of the Lyonnais Charles Philipon, a designer and major press boss whose political impertinence is inseparable from his graphic creativity.
As a counterpoint, more recent photographic research around the notion of disfigured/refigured portrait is presented, with an evocation of the photographic caricatures of Weegee, the Walter Bondy photographic collection re-photographed by Jacqueline Salmon, and the works of Yves Trémorin , by Jean-Louis Garnell or Catherine Poncin.
