Arles 2026 : The Night at the Théâtre Antique — July 9

Preview

This evening, July 9, from 9:45 p.m. to midnight, the traditional Night at the Théâtre Antique will take place. On the program:

PRIX PICTET
ALFREDO JAAR
Chilean artist, architect and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar, whose politically engaged work explores images, memory and the urgencies of the contemporary world, will be honored at the Théâtre Antique as the recipient of the eleventh Prix Pictet for The End, his series devoted to Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Appearing alone on stage, Jaar reflects on this series before turning to more recent projects that extend beyond photography into a powerful reflection on ecology, perception and the power of images.
Preceded by the announcement of the theme for the twelfth edition of the Prix Pictet.

MING SMITH
A major figure in American photography, Ming Smith explores Black interiority, memory, and spirituality through a deeply experimental practice. A member of the Kamoinge collective since 1972, she became in 1979 the first Black woman photographer whose work was acquired by MoMA. Her work is now exhibited in leading museums and institutions worldwide.

PARK CHAN-WOOK
Presented for the first time in Europe by Lee Ufan Arles, Park Chan-wook’s photographic work reveals a freer, more contemplative side of the Korean filmmaker. Echoing the exhibition, the festival welcomes him to the Théâtre Antique for a conversation on his approach to images, from everyday details and suspended moments to his distinctive way of looking at the world.

THE MAISON EUROPÉENNE DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE TURNS 30!  ONE STORY, 24,000 IMAGES
With Olivia Arthur
To mark the 30th anniversary of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP), the Rencontres d’Arles invites this major institution to present its collections to the public. British photographer Olivia Arthur constructs a fictional narrative from a personal selection of nearly 24,000 works from the MEP collection, representing French and international photography from 1950 to the present day.
