Third component of a series devoted to the rediscovery of the Musée Réattu’s photography department in Arles, the exhibition Rencontres in Réattu is revealing the Rencontres’ collection, constituted of the prints exhibited photographers have left in Arles each year. It indirectly reflects the choices of the festival directors and exhibition curators, who have been constructing its identity since the 1970s. This collection, rich and varied, closely follows the global evolution of photography and retrace the destiny of a city now fully associated to this art. Open to all artist and cultures and forced to constantly renew its program (which makes it particularly forward looking), the festival has thus accumulated works coming from major figures in photography’s history (Mario Giacomelli, Duane Michals, Martin Parr), pioneering artists of the contemporary photography scene (Sharles Fréger, Aamonn Doyle), young collectives that federated across the five continents, and also non-professionals, who sometimes remain anonymous.
