Arles 2013: Prix BMW –Mazaccio & Drowilals

Preview

BMW has just announced the winners of its 2013 Residency at the Nicéphore Niépce Museum. It has been awarded to two photographers working together, Mazaccio & Drowilal. Following on from Alexandra Catiere in 2011 and Marion Gronier in 2012, whose work is currently being exhibited at the Rencontres d’Arles, it’s over to the two young photographers, Elise Mazac and Robert Drowilal, who work under the name Mazaccio & Drowilal, to take up their residency at the Museum in Chalon sur Saône in the autumn.

Winners of the third award since the creation of the Residency, Mazaccio & Drowilal were chosen from seventy-five submissions by a selection committee presided over by BMW and made up of figures from the world of photography (François Cheval, Curator of the Nicéphore Niépce Museum, François Hébel, Director of the Rencontres d’Arles, Julien Frydman, Director of Paris Photo, Chantal Nedjib, Communications Consultant and Patrick de Carolis, Vice-Chancellor of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la photographie d’Arles). The selection Committee was beguiled by the originality of the images, their quality and the creative approach used, which muddies the waters between the real and the representation of the real.

Mazaccio & Drowilal will receive a grant of €6000 and be invited to the Nicéphore Niepce Museum for three months in the autumn of 2013 in Chalon-sur-Saône. Their work will be published in the BMW Art and Culture collection and exhibited at the next Rencontres d’Arles, at Paris Photo in 2014 and then at the BMW Museum in Munich in 2015.
