Each year for its fall programming, la maison rouge (Paris) exposes a sizeable international collection. This year, it is Artur Walther’s exceptional collection of photographs that will be unveiled. In twenty years, Walther gathered collections by country, starting with German photography, and then American, then turning to African and Asian photography.
The After Eden exhibit directed by the commissioner Simon Njami, presents a selection of more than 900 works by over 50 artists. Historical photographs, daguerreotypes, contemporary photographs, videos, magazines, albums from the end of the 20th century, create a voyage around landscapes, faces, performances, portraits and anthropometric or ethnographic essays.
Artur Walther was born in Ulm, Germany. He lives and works in New York. Former investment banker, he opened his collection to the public in June 2010 with the inauguration of a museum, consisting of four buildings and located in a residential area of his hometown, Neu-Ulm / Berlafingen, in southern Germany. He has backed and supported photographic awards and programs for 20 years.
Artur Walther began at the end of the 1990s, collecting firstly works by contemporary German photographers – including Becher and August Sander – before expanding his collection of photographs and videos to the four corners of the planet. It is thus the most important Asian and African contemporary photography collection in the world.
