Alison McCauley: Coast and Currents

Preview

Alison McCauley is always looking for surprising angles. In every space and situation, she is on alert. It is not by chance that she came to Cannes for the first time during its annual festival. Straightaway, she was fascinated by such an organization. Addicted, she came back for five years to track the irony of what was happening on the steps of the Palais, in the streets, the hotels, and beaches. The American shoots the stars and sponsors of cinema, but also body guards, footmen, starlets, fans, and tourists. These backstage views are full of irony and are sometimes absurdly surreal in a perfectly organized chaos, where everything is luxury, noise, and pleasure. There is an implicit but playful portrayal. The view sometimes becomes a bit more astringent than common sense. Nothing is right but everything is magic.
