The Photography Show presented by AIPAD starts this Friday in New York. From Wednesday to Friday we will dedicate our editions to the event.
Here is an “aperitif” of what is coming, a collaboration between an American and a French gallery.
This is their introductory text:
This year Etherton Gallery is collaborating with Paris Galerie Baudoin Lebon on an exhibition celebrating one of the most remarkable and controversial photographers of the last 50 years, Joel-Peter Witkin. Witkin fabricates detailed sets, photographs them, and then spends hours in the darkroom bringing his negatives to the brink of destruction to create a finished photograph. Using humor, wit and sensuality, his images range from social critiques to odes to beauty.
Our shared presentation will examine Witkin’s artistic process and include never-before-seen drawings, maquettes, and contact sheets. Also on view, career-defining images such as a large print of Harvest, 1984, which will be featured in the upcoming exhibition at the Louvre Museum, LES CHOSES: L’histoire depuis la Préhistoire (10/13/22-1/23/23); and two unique gelatin silver prints with encaustic, Las Meninas, 1987/2021 and Prudence, 1996/2021. Don’t miss the most significant demonstration of Joel-Peter Witkin’s working process ever exhibited at AIPAD.
We look forward to seeing you in New York!
