AIPAD 2015 : Michael Dawson Gallery (US)

Specializing in 19th and 20th century American photography with an emphasis on vintage and contemporary work from California and the southwest. The Michael Dawson Gallery, based in Los Angeles, also maintain an inventory of rare photographic books. In part of the AIPAD Photography Show 2015, the gallery selected  three  prints on display at the fair    Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Carole Reiff and Edward Weston.

1. Manuel Alvarez Bravo

An early example of Bravo’s combination of Surrealist influences combined with the depiction of contemporary Mexican life.

2. Carole Reiff

Carole Reiff was one of the few female jazz photographers working in New York in the 1950s. Her work was more interpretive than documentary. As a free-lance photojournalist, she covered recording sessions, interviews, jam sessions, events and concerts for record companies including Columbia, Atlantic, Riverside, United Artists, and Prestige, among others. Her photographs appeared in Esquire, Time and the music trade journals. Metronome magazine cited her portrait of Theolonius Monk as “Jazz Photograph of the Year, 1956”.

3. Edward Weston

A fine example of Weston’s early work in portraiture.
