Agence Roger Viollet : 150 years of the Paris Commune

Preview

It was on March 18, 1871 that clashes between the federates and the Versailles troops began. After several months of conflict with Prussia, the Parisians experienced famine. The revolt rumbled when the governor gave the order to disarm the National Guard by taking the cannons located on the Butte Montmartre and went into exile in Versailles. Barricades were set up all over the capital. A few days later, on March 28, the Paris Commune was officially proclaimed and would last until May 28, or 71 days of civil war.
