This is the fourth edition of the sole photojournalism prize in Portugal. The conditions of participation restrict its impact while legitimizing its purpose, since there are two ways to apply: either as a citizen of a Portuguese-speaking country or Galicia (Spain), or to work in one of these regions. The prize is divided into “classic” categories for an award in photojournalism , current events, daily life, art and entertainment, environment, portraits and sports.
The exhibition features the work of each of the nominees, with four photographs each. (Other photographs are visible on the internet site of Estaçao Imagem.) The winning stories cover various themes, most often the crisis, through its impact on Greece for the work of Bruno Simoes, who received first prize in all categories, which presents a dark series where the black and white adds to the ambient anxiety, to the consequences of the crisis in Portugal in the works of Pedro Nunes, Antonio Pedro Santos, Patricia De Melo and Daniel Rocha.
In addition to the prize, Estaçao Imagem also awards a scholarship under the same conditions of the prize but with a precise goal. This scholarship allows a photographer to produce work in the region of Alentejo in central Portugal. This choice reflects the original ties between the Estaçao Imagem group and the city of Mora in Alentejo, which remain despite political changes. (The winner of this prize is covered in another article.)
Moreover, Estaçao Imagem has many other projects and its eyes are turned towards Lisbon. Starting in June 2014, when the gallery is supposed to open in a new, dynamic and flourishing neighborhood of Cais do Sodré. Visitors will almost have their feet in the Tagus at the next edition in a space that is less impressive but more intimate and better situated.
