In this sea of photo publications today, prizes like the First Book Award serve as a beacon.
Since 2012, in collaboration with the national Media Museum in Bradford (UK), Mack Books has invited an international panel of judges to put together a list of photo projects that have never seen publication.
The winner of the 2013 edition is Between the Shell, in which Paul Salveson turns everyday objects—brooms, bedding, chips, chairs—into colorful, surrealist and abstract tableaux reminiscent of the Swiss duo TONK. Runner-up Aleix Plademunt’s Almost There is a visual extrapolation of the relationship between time and space, from a postcard that arrived at its destination 101 years later.
With the jury’s high standards and the incredible work of the Mack Books graphics team, this is definitely a prize to follow.
