Wipplay is a playful photo contest site whose motto could be “Play with the image, in the image, through the image.” Launched in 2012 by Julie Plus, wipplay.com is open to all, and gives amateur and professional photographers alike the opportunity to take part in photographic games through a social network, with contests related to cultural events, festivals, artistic trends and whatever’s in the air.
From simple photo contests that help showcase unknown talents to meetings between amateurs and professionals, from an updated take on “Where’s Waldo” to racing games, users are invited to join a community of photo fans, share their images on the web and have them evaluated by an eclectic group of viewers. Every week sees a new competition with themes as creative as they are playful and cultural, like Hopper et moi with the Grand Palais/RMN, “We love America” with Slate.fr and Worldcrunch.com for the US elections, “Flash ton bureau” with the Pavillon de l’Arsenal, and “Boring Pictures” as a tribute to the often surprising beauty of failed pictures. The formula is simple: a community of “wipplayers” and their images, a partnership with a sponsor or a brand looking for hip content, a jury of users and professionals made up of photographers and people from the worlds of photography and culture. Once the contests open, wipplayers post their photos to participate in the challenges, and increase the standing of their profiles by interacting with the community. On the final day of the contest, the winner of the user jury is announced and the professional jury meets.
Two winners are awarded prizes from the partner and Wipplay, including art books, cultural passes, cameras and travel packages. Amateurs, professionals, cultural institutions and companies have all shown immense interest in this playful original platform which gives new life to the photographic image.
