Walter Schels, Portraits of Men and Animals

Preview

In Stuttgart, Germany, a retrospective dedicated to photographer Walter Schels is being held with over two hundred photographs exhibited. Walter Schels is distinguished by his extensive work for magazines such as Stern. He photographed a multitude of celebrities: Josef Beuys, Andy Warhol, and the Dalai Lama. He also realized many series on transexuals, newborns, people close to death, people in parks, and animals. “Human existence had never been so well visualized than through the convincing form of Walter Schel’s work,” explains Klaus Honnef, curator of the exhibition. Portraits of animals make up an entire floor of the exhibition at ABTART. Schels portrays them no differently than humans, in front of a neutral background and with one studio light. “As with humans, I’m looking for direct eye contact and direct proximity with the animals,” explains the photographer. In 2013, terrified by death, Walter Schels had drawn much attention while photographing people before and after death for an audacious series. This exhibition in Stuttgart is his first retrospective.
