The music magazine VoxPop, who grants an important place to photography, is celebrating its twentieth issue. On this occasion, the Agnès B Gallery will feature an exhibition of photographs produced for the magazine. The editor-in-chief, Jean-Vic Chapus, tells us about it:
“Since the beginning (October 2007), we wanted a different magazine. The main message of the publication is “Tout & Musique” (Everything and Music). In 20 issues, VOXPOP has covered it all from the most exciting groups to generational artists as well as others as fascinating as the music itself: literature, cities, personalities, fashion, rockers and rappers’ sociology, the cult of the image.
Photography is important for VOXPOP. Its place is even integral to our project of a publication different from the others. With every issue, 90% of the images published in the pages of the magazine are of its own productions. And most of them done in film. Photos for in-depth features, portraits or unexpected portfolios.
So if photography is important, VOXPOP’s commitment to the spirit of independence is just as important. That is why, on the occasion of Record Store Day, the magazine wanted to be a part of the operation organized by Agnes b and Rough Trade, featuring an exclusive selection of key artists of the ‘independent’ scene. From Anna Calvi to Tom Waits, these 11 portraits shot by VOXPOP’s photographers -Louis Canadas, Samuel Kirszenbaum, Julien Mignot, Raphael Neal and Mathieu Zazzo – attempt to capture the independent pop aesthetics of the last few years.”
