Vincent Descotils : Tristessa

Preview

In pictorial Art, the representation of naked human bodies is a deliberate construction in an atmosphere that becomes the essential vehicle for the message.

It does not matter whether this atmosphere is constituted: by the naked bodies themselves (or only by certain parts), by a reconstructed artificial decor (or natural landscapes), by a solicited atmosphere (or technological effects). In any case, bodily representation flourishes only within a psychologically essential framework. Photography is no exception to the rule, both in so-called academic research and in more contemporary creative discourse.

In his new collection, Vincent Descotils has nothing aggressive in his shots of fairly modest body parts, with questioning sets of curves. Then, the play of lights invites itself to each shot and is accentuated, to harden in the dark room.

The atmosphere becomes heavy, in the technical construction of the images, when the red veil settles between the reader and the object of his desires. The inactinic light of the old photo lab, the subdued glow of a meeting house not really honorable , the fire of what is forbidden which revives lost passions, the warmth of an infrared filter which maddens desire.

Light, channeled by the right photographic tools and by the imagination, brings us reflection, emotion, illusions, admiration.
