On this week-end was inaugurated the first photographic festival of Deauville called Contact Sheets created by Philippe Augier, mayor of Deauville, presided by Bettina Rheims and under the art direction of Patrick Rémy. We are showing you here the exhibition of Lise Sarfati and Charles Fréger. Tomorrow, we will present you the contest exhibition of six students of the Ecole Cantonnale d’Art de Lausanne; and a beautiful addition, pictures taken during the winter time change for the theme called The twenty-fith hour.
Born in 1958, Lise Sarfati lives and works both in Paris and the United States. She starts taking pictures as a teenager in Nice. At fifteen, she discovers Russia while vacationing in Sotchi on the Black Sea. Later, as a student at the Sorbonne, she obtains a Master’s degree with a thesis in Russian photography of the 1920’s. She returns to Russia in 1989 and spends close to a decade studying this country during its transitional period.
Following Marguerite Duras’ death in 1996, Lise Sarfati takes a series of photos of the writer’s home in Neauphle-le-Château, entitled Post factum. In 2003, she leaves for America, travelling throughout the country, shooting a series on the solitary life of young women. Her recently published book, Immaculate, features photos of young girls in the gardens of their small town Californian private girls’ schools.
Lise Sarfati has been a member of Magnum Photos since 2001.
