Three Boys from Pasadena

Preview

We have already made reference to this tribute book Three Boys from Pasadena (La Lettre, December 13, 2010). The Gallery acte2galerie has created a link to be diffused: ThreeBoysfromPasadena-thebook. We are also taking advantage of this occasion to show you some never before seen images.

Three Boys from Pasadena is a tribute to Helmut Newton by three of his former assistants, Mark Arbeit, George Holz, and Just Loomis. All three are graduates of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where they first met, studied and became friends with the great Helmut Newton in the late 1970’s. For almost thirty years, they kept in touch and shared their personal work with both Helmut and his wife June.

June first conceptualized the idea of the Three Boys from Pasadena after Helmut’s death, and honored the “boys” with a group exhibition at the Helmut Newton Foundation in June 2009.

“It was fitting that I invited them for a group show in Helmut’s Foundation in Berlin on June 3rd 2009. It’s unfair that I am writing this piece instead of Helmut because he would be so proud of them all” – June Newton, Monte Carlo, 2009.

Through a series of photographs, letters and memorabilia, the book celebrates 30 years of this unique mentorship and friendship. It also features distinctively different photograph portfolios by each artist and contains writings by June Newton, Karl Johnson and Dr. Matthias Harder.
