The Silver Eye : Jacques Revon : The ecological alternative developer with Burgundy wine

Preview

Jacques Revon explores in this chapter the use of an ecological alternative developer made with Burgundy wine.

“Film photography is initially authentic because the negative remains, even if one day it is scanned and therefore becomes digital at the risk, as we know, of being later manipulated.” JR

300 ml to 500 ml depending on your type of tank are generally necessary to develop in a small tank, a 24X36 / 36 views format film (1.70 meters long) and 600 ml for a 120 / 6X6 film (width 6 cm length 80cm).

Dilution in 500 ml of this wine (Pinot Noir grape variety) at 23 degrees Celsius:

40 grams of sodium carbonate

10 grams of vitamin C 4 grams of iodized salt

Filter the mixture using a paper filter, such as a coffee filter, so as not to leave fine particles, then add two drops of Photo-Flo solution or a wetting agent in this developer, in order to promote its action on the entire emulsion. Pre-wet the film for five minutes in warm water, then begin development.

My tests were carried out in two different formats used for shooting. 24X36 film of 36 views used with a CANON F1 camera then a second 120/6X6 format film of 12 exposures used with a SEMFLEX camera and finally a third 24X36 film with a Leica M2 camera.

First, always pre-wet the film for five minutes in temperate water, then proceed to development.

First test: the 24X36 film was, for reasons of test economy, cut in two in the dark: development of a strip of 18 frames of 24X36 film, Rollei 100 ISO / development at 24°.4 Celsius duration: 16 min. CANON F1 camera with a focal length of 28 mm.

– Fixing for 3 minutes here in HYPAM Ilford 1+4 at 20° Celsius then classic washing of the film for 10 minutes, emptying the contents every 2 minutes.

The film is finally dipped in a wetting agent for 30 seconds or soaked in demineralized water for one minute before being hung up to air dry.

Important: to save water when washing your film, which is more and more necessary these days, I suggest the method recommended by Jost j Marchesi in the book ILFORD PROCÉDÉ NEGATIF published in 1980 by Editions Jean Spinatsch in Geneva, on the condition that you have fixed your film with HYPAM fixer. –

-1 Empty the tank well to wash and rinse the spiral which contains your film or foil.

– 2 Fill the tank with water then slowly tip it over 5 times.

– 3 Empty the tank again, then fill it, and this time tip it 10 times.

– 4 Empty the tank again then fill it a third time and tip it over 20 times.

– 5 If you want your film to last as long as possible, then carry out tip number 4 twice more.
