Lucien Chauffard, mentor and friend of Robert Doisneau! The first festival “TEMPS D’EXPO” which takes place in Pézenas from October 20th to November 2nd, will present an exhibition of his photographies. Michèle Labonde, who fights for his recognition, sent this text to us!
A gentle dreamer, passionate about his art, Lucien Chauffard was born in 1906. With a gift for drawing, at the age of 13 he won the first prize for the Chalon-sur-Saône carnival poster. Then he came to the Beaux Arts in Paris.
In turn he will be poster artist, publicist, photographer, happily mixing humanist photography and quality commercial shots. The Régie Renault, Simca, the French Navy, the Lapierre fisheries, the women’s press and many others called for his talent.
He rubbed shoulders with André Vigneau, Ergy Landau, Hélène Boucher, Eric Tabarly and above all Robert Doisneau, of whom, from 1929, he became friend and mentor, guiding him in his beginnings.
Freelance photographer, he pursued a career far from fame and honor. Tried by mourning, old age and illness, he passed away in 1982, among general indifference. In September 2019, an exhibition at the Florensac media library finally pays him a first tribute.
