Following the publication of Harmony of the Seas: Naissance d’un géant des mer, logging the construction of the largest cruise ship in the world, the shipyard in Saint-Nazaire gave the young photographer carte blanche to document this “city within a city.” Saint-Nazaire is in fact one of the biggest, oldest, and at the same time the most innovative shipyards in the world. Everything here is giant and spectacular. Sylvain Bonniol was able to explore its 250 acres day and night over the course of two years, observing ships under construction, engineers in their offices, carpenters in their workshops, as well as witness some highlights of the sea trials… This work has now been published in a book format, offering the authentic and insightful perspective of the artist, where portraits of workers in action resonate with the construction spaces. The volume takes us on an immersive journey through this extraordinary shipyard.
