The April 18 auction at Swann Auction Galleries in New York bridges classical and contemporary visual idioms with important work, including Robert Mapplethorpe’s Lisa Lyon, Dorothea Lange’s emotive Korean Child, Man Ray’s Electricité portfolio, Ansel Adams’ iconic Portfolio Three: Yosemite Valley, as well as dynamic constructs by Barbara Kasten, and Sarah Charlesworth’s evocative Subtle Body, from the Academy of Secrets series.
The sale also offers a suite of 50 Abstract Expressionist photographs by Aaron Siskind and a Lawrence Schiller portfolio titled Marilyn 12. Other photographers represented include Robert Adams, Edward Burtynsky, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Andrew Moore, Irving Penn, Edward Ruscha and Hiroshi Sugimoto.
An expansive offerings of vernacular photographs include small archives and collections, ranging from motorcycle gangs, around-the-world travelogues and documentarian imagery from the food industry, to women’s bowling, fashion, and NASA. The highlight is an album of 118 photographs depicting the city and region of Cusco, Peru, 16 of which are credited to Martin Chambi.
