American photographer Susan Meiselas, member of Magnum Photos and recrector of the Magnum Foundation, teamed up with the association Multistory to fight domestic violence against women during a sixteen-day campaign, launched on November 25, 2017. The photographer made a series of photographs on women living in a refuge in the Black Country (Great Britain, Midlands) to raise awareness on violence and precarious living conditions resulting from it. The book, A Room of Their Own, is also available and is given as a donation to the campaign to generate funds.
The campaign began last last month, on the Day for the End of Violence against Women in the world. It will end on December 10th. On this occasion, Multistory has planned a series of events, workshops and conferences on this subject.
Invited to participate in this campaign, the American photographer said: ‘It is only when I entered a shelter and I began to discuss with these women, I began to imagine creating a work that can transcribe women’s lives, deeply touched’, that she realized the magnitude of this social problem.
Multistoy is a national association, founded by the Arts Council England and the Sandwell Metropolitan Council.
