This is one of the most amazing solo shows of Paris Photo.
An almost surrealist propaganda exhibition …
Welcome to North Korea, One of the world most closed country … a subject of hot news while a nuclear standoff is played between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump. While professional photographers are normally forbidden to stay there, under surveillance Stephan Gladieu was able to produce portraits in Kim Jong-un’s country in 2017, In spite of the omnipresence of the propaganda, he gave a very personal glaze, of great humanity on the inhabitants of the country. From the banality of daily life in North Korea, Stephan Gladieu has captured the quintessence of the ideological and societal dimension of one of the most closed countries in the world. In every scene, even the most innocuous is exposed the power of the forbidden, … an Orwellian universe of another age, a disturbing strangeness. Where is life, where does the set design end?
