Published by Skira Paris, this book shows the most recent photographs by Mexican artist Adrian Burns, in which he invites us to go beyond appearances to discover a symbolic world hidden in the mysteries of nature. His “pareidolic” eye reveals the organic curve of a snow-covered valley, the geometric fragmentation of ice and waves, or even the physiognomy of a face. By reworking his graphite or acrylic prints, he emphasizes the signs and symbols that mark an underlying structure in the chaos of nature. Abandoning subjects and objects in favor of colors and textures, he transforms the contemplation of the landscape into a portal to abstraction and the mystical experience of forms.
Adrian Burns began his photographic work at the Putney School in Vermont, USA, known for its fine arts program. He continued his academic studies at Parsons School of Design in Paris, France, specializing in art history and photography. He then moved to New York where he worked as a photographer for magazines and companies, particularly in the fashion sector, collaborating with the biggest brands – Cartier, Levi’s, Louis Vuitton, among others. He has also benefited from several personal and group exhibitions.
Returning to Mexico in 2004, he launched his own production company and created AB Studio. He then continued to practice art photography by exploring different fields, until the creation of his own technique in 2018, which combines photography, graphite and acrylic. Thanks to this unique practice, the images are never fully revealed the first time, and encourage a return, contemplation, and active participation in the work. Through its movements and its relationship to light, the viewer is encouraged to gradually perceive the contours and nuances of the shapes hidden in the original photograph.
His artwork is exhibited in several museums around the world, including private collections and foundations such as the Vermont Museum of Contemporary Art +Design, the American British Cowdray Medical Center Foundation, and the Fundación/Colección Jumex au Mexico.
Work edited by Denise Wendel-Poray, writer and art critic, including an interview with the artist.
Éric Garandeau, writer, former president of the National Center for Cinema and Animated Images.
