This year there will be the first edition of the contest “La Muta”: The candidates will be exhibited in the shops of the city center and the winners will be chosen by public vote.

The Biennale di Senigallia, your new destination:

A Renaissance city amid seascapes and mountains, Adriatic beaches, photographic exhibitions, accessible artworks, curious gastronomy.

Join and meet collectors, curators, photographers and passersby in lectures, debates and town squares.

Complete the La Muta Prize itinerary and vote for your favorite projects.

The emblematic monument of the city of Senigallia is the famous Rotonda al Mare, where several conferences will take place as well as the evening  gala  on Saturday May 20.

The main exhibitions are accessible on foot, in the historical palaces, today, separated from their former beach by the railroad.

“Who is afraid of his reflection?” is an exhibition already open to the public at the Rocca Roveresca.

The first room invites the visitor to discover the worried looks and the signs of uneasiness in early Daguerreian portraits of the 1850s.

Who better described the mixture of fascination and anxiety in front of the new invention than the French poet of Les Fleurs du Mal?

“Was this all it was? A day in the life of Charles Baudelaire”, presents the penultimate poem of the Flowers of Evil dedicated to these mixed feelings towards photography and traces the visit of the poet to the photographer Eugène Carjat in December 1861.

The reconstituted photo studio invites visitors to play a staged portrait session.

The La Muta prize is the great novelty of this Biennale 2023: it is a photography prize open to all to propose future exhibitions. The candidates can win either a residence in Senigallia or an exhibition in Paris.

The projects of the 26 finalists will be exhibited anonymously for three days, from May 18 to 20, at the merchants partner of the city center

Senigallia residents and visitors are invited to express their opinion and vote for the four winning projects before May 20, 2pm.

The names of the four winners will be announced during the gala evening at the rotonda a mare on Saturday, May 20 at 8pm.

The map and the itinerary of the visits are updated online on the Biennale website, biennaledisenigallia.it

There is another real novelty, but a little more discreet.

In order to print the photographs of some exhibitions and the prize of La Muta. An agreement has been made with a master papermaker. The recipe of the paper pulp will remain secret, we can only reveal that it contains six ingredients, including cotton rag fibers and recycled old photographic paper (prints on salted or albumen paper).

Paper has been made in Fabriano for 800 years. And starting this year, the Maestro Cartaio Luigi Mecella prepared the exclusive paper for ATELIER 41, using a secret recipe.

It must be said that in the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of Fabriano were not allowed to leave the city or emigrate under penalty of death if they ever set foot in the vicinity, because the secret of papermaking was considered vital to the community and anyone who went on a journey was suspected of betraying the other inhabitants to pay for his trip. Remember what the Arabs had to use as a strategy to get the secret from the Chinese in the eighth century.

This exclusive paper will also allow us to offer visitors who wish to leave with a souvenir of Senigallia prints of photographs of the artists exhibited, whether contemporary or old photographs loaned by collectors who have given their consent.

It is an art edition proposed by the ATELIER41 having an intermediate status between the numbered print of the gallery, and the facsimile reproduction, available on a simple click, and at the same time perfect and terribly disappointing for its easiness.

The multipass greatly facilitates access to all buildings, events and exhibitions, it is free of charge and will be available to all participants, exhibitors, artists, speakers, candidates for the La Muta prize, sponsors and supporters of the Biennale.
