The jury chose to award the Reportage Bourse to Sandra Mehl for her story Ilona and Maddelena, the first names of two adolescent sisters that the photographer followed in their daily lives in Cité Gély in Montpellier, a “sensitive” district close to the city centre. As much a testimony of youth in a working-class environment as an introspection, this series shows how the neighbourhood, the rituals of family and friendship, can provide a refuge in a disadvantaged environment, thus bringing a dialogue between social hardships and tenderness, current difficulties and future aspirations.
