Rotterdam Photo, is an annual photo fair with a festival flair. The event celebrates the spectrum of contemporary photography in all its diversity.
Rotterdam Photo found a new venue, It used to be at the base of the imposing Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, but now a new location was found at the Keilewerf. So visitors can hop from Haute Photographie to Rotterdam Photo to the Design fair OBJECT in the Haka building. Being part of Rotterdam Art Week, the event yearly attracts around 10.000 visitors. Among them are art lovers, collectors, gallerists, as well as international art professionals from different parts of the globe.
Every year the fair offers a wide gamut of independent photographers the opportunity to exhibit their projects. Photographers can participate individually or on behalf of a gallery by submitting their works and projects via an open call related to the current theme. The goal of the photo fair is to offer an affordable exhibition space directly to photographers, proposing lower costs compared to traditional art/photo fairs.
With this contribution we feature images of invited photographers Bill Viola with the USC Game Innovation Lab presenting the video game The Night Journey (2007–2018) and Frederik Herman and a selection of featured photographers: Anatoly Suzdaltsev , Annabella Schwagten, Ashley Miller, Bernaded Dexters, Céline Guillerm, Clover, Guido Castagnoli, Haider Khan, Harry Carter, Inna Pachkina, James Hensby ,Julia M. Free, Kumi Oguro, Luchandro Franca, David Kulev and Malou Moy, Maan Limburg, Morgane Clément-Gagnon, Mouneb Taim, Patrycja Lassocinska, Philippe Zamora, Robbe Maes & Reynout Dekimpe, Susan Madsen, Tetsuo Kashiwada, Will Vickers, Xiaozhu Shen. At PhotoRotterdam you can discover a wide range of photographic approaches: from reportage tot documentary, from street photography to conceptual, from portrait to montage…
Inspired by the history of Rotterdam as a port city, the festival provides the selected photographers with exhibition space in repurposed shipping containers, as well as the public space of Rotterdam city to bring photography outside the ‘white cube’ tradition.
In addition to the exhibitions, Rotterdam Photo organizes talks, workshops, and a fringe program with music and digital installations throughout the city. The festival feeling is created thanks to various exhibitions and leisure activities. Street vendors, cafes, and restaurants on the festival’s location offer great food and delicious drinks – the public and participants can enjoy the events’ atmosphere, celebrating photography together with us.
