The photographs of Rinko Kawauchi (b. 1972 in Shiga, Japan) are colorful and particularly luminous. In the works that she has published since 2001, which have brought her fame, the photographs were printed on white paper.
Sheets, released in 2013 by Kominek Books in Berlin, takes a different approach. The book is all black and very matte. It presents a new aspect of the photographer’s work: her contact sheets. The publisher Misha Kominek already let readers rediscover the work of Enrique Metinides in 2001 by showing his photographs in sequence in the book Series.
The images are familiar, or perhaps not. They are the reflections of passing hours and years, along with the daily life Rinko Kawauchi likes to document on her Tumblr.
The featured contact sheets are selections from the past ten years, and their organization is more poetic than chronological. Chicks hatch—an airplane takes off—a woman sews—a firework explodes—a light passes… The ephemeral stands still long enough to be photographed.
Rinko Kawauchi aficionados will recognize the eye from The Eyes, The Ears (2005), the rose on the cover of Illuminance (2011) and the flames from Illuminance, Ametsuchi, Seeing Shadow (2012). We can enjoy seeing the final image chosen by Kawauchi in the editing process, or simply let ourselves be guided by the storyboard. Following the photographer’s vision and thoughts as the film unrolls proves to be a real pleasure.
