Werner Mansholt presents his exhibition entitled “Zwischenwelten” (“Worlds Between”) and is part of the Photo-Festival ” 12. Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie“. He presents it as follows.
I have photographed in different cities and countries on photographic journeys I have undertaken over the last 10 years.
As a photographer I work as as a flaneur, the images that emerge from my work as a street photographer are much more the result of ‘happenstance’ than a grand plan or a set of conceptual drivers.
I strive for and am always looking for images that are enigmatic and multi-layered, humorous or surreal.
My images are spontaneous, associative and emotional, and never staged. They may be touching, they may sometimes trigger the emotions and the desire to find a story or a narrative in the images, but they are equally not superficial and there is no journalistic impulse.
I am interested in the breaks, the cracks, the edges, the gaps, the spaces between and the contradictions that the world unendingly offers up and which offer a fleeting glimpse of the complexities that lie behind and beneath the surfaces and the superficial.
In my work I encounter beauty and transience, pride and longing, loneliness and community — in short life in all its diversity and fertility.
I hope my images have an element of poetry about them but presented without kitsch or romanticism, as Øystein Sevåg once said “Close your eyes and see“.
