The exhibition presents James Welling‘s most recent series Personae, which relates to his ongoing series Cento that focuses on sculptures and artifacts from the Mediterranean region. In these new works, Welling reanimates images from Greek and Roman busts using elements drawn from historical artworks including Old Master paintings to Impressionist works.
The series continues Welling’s project to focus on the history of photography and construction of images themselves, something he has focused on since the 1970s when he attended CalArts. Notably in this series, he travels through time not only with references made to modern art historical movements, but also criss-crossing a wide range of ancient sculpture periods from Greek classical history to the later Roman Imperial period.
