Photographer Sharon Latham opens her thirty-year archive, looking back on life on the road with Noel Gallagher.
“That was the first time I photographed the arena since the Manchester bombing. I found it very overwhelming. This is my area, my town; it’s an amazing venue, an amazing place to shoot. I remember sitting on the stage and literally crying. I don’t know how Noel could cope with those lyrics (Don’t Look Back In Anger) being sung to him with such emotion.” Sharon Latham, Manchester Arena 2018
Sharon Latham is a renowned and highly respected British photographer who has been at the forefront of both music and sport photography for thirty years. Despite a successful run as the first female official Premier League photographer, it is her innate ability to capture the visual poetry of live music, most notably her work touring with Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds, that has seen her work reach audiences, galleries and publications.
Sport was Latham’s catapult into a photography career, also serving as the platform for her later shift into music. As the former official photographer for her beloved Manchester City, Sharon is currently the official photographer for Burnley FC, helping them to document their relentless march towards promotion back into the Premier League. Having formed a friendship with world renowned musician Noel Gallagher through Manchester City, attending matches together and bonding over their love of football, Latham subsequently asked to tour with him and his band High Flying Birds in 2016.
“Down the years I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the best photographers in the world and I would put Sharon right up there. At its best a photograph should speak. What are the pictures saying? They are saying: We – NGHFB – have the best job in the world. To work, play, travel and party with these people is an absolute pleasure. I’m so happy that Big Shaz was there to capture these moments.” – Noel Gallagher, NME
