The series LANDscapeING by the duao Raom & Loba is now on display in Bogotá and Lyon, having previously been shown in Paris and Buenos Aires. This ongoing photo project depicts children dropped into the middle of the landscape.
The word landscaping, strictly speaking, means, “the act of landscaping, developing a landscape.” The way we spell the word puts “scape,” which means both “a view” and “an escape,” in the middle of the word “landing.” A meteorite made of a mineral gangue protecting a core, this idea grew like a seed into different forms of fiction, transforming everywhere it fell.
“Different landscapes, with no indication of where they are, create a sort of personal topology. These archaic places and natural spaces are dramatized. Each photograph is a piece of a fragmented narrative, and the viewer can take part by establishing links among them with the help of their own memories.
These isolated characters battle against the immensity of the land where they’ve fallen, perhaps after a journey. We don’t know what they’re doing. They’re playing Robinson Crusoe. Are they lost? Are they at work? They’re looking, searching. Sometimes it seems as if they’re waiting for something we cannot see, something outside the frame.
This is naiveté in the first sense of the word: something that has just been born, and found itself dropped into a different world. The “fall” as a rebirth: falling back into childhood. This is a dream, or a game. A game that has something to do with the discovery and the exploration of a place that comes into being as we explore it.
