I have always loved animals and nature, but the trigger was my first trip to Southern Africa. The animals, the light, the colors, the smells of the Savannah have deeply marked me.
The first moment was a teddy bear that my aunt gave me when I was a child. All my polar bear photos are related to the tenderness, sweetness and love I had for this bear. The second moment was a photograph of an elephant that my grandfather gave me for my 7th birthday. For years, for me, Africa and animals were in black and white.
Over the last twenty years traveling across Africa, I have seen these felines being born, growing and flourishing, then at the very end giving way to their descendants. A privileged witness to the circle of life in the savannah, I am lucky enough to see the same animals again and again.
Female leopards are territorial and to a lesser extent female cheetahs. They therefore stay in the same area. Although often furtive, it is possible to see them again regularly. It is a bit magical to come back a few months later, and discover that the intrepid little cheetah cubs have left their mother and now live in total independence.
I was lucky one summer to find three female cheetahs, the grandmother, the mother and the daughter, in different territories but close to each other and each having their own offspring. The youngest raised 4 cubs who all reached adulthood. Almost a miracle among cheetahs, whose cubs are regular prey for hyenas and lions.
The savannah is magnificent and since my first trip, each time I return, I can’t wait to go back.
