The exhibition Yasuni en imágenes is now on display at the Centro Cultural de la Pontificia Universidad Católica in Quito, Ecuador, featuring some 300 digital color prints shot in nature and in the research laboratory in Yasuni National Park.
Curated by Belé Mena, the exhibition shows the park’s rich biodiversity, life in its indigenous communities, the settlers, the oil companies, scientific research, and a room filled with everyday objects from life in the Amazon. Yasuni National Park is threatened by deforestation, road construction, noise, new settlers and hunters, as well as the loss of the immaterial heritage of the Amazon peoples.
For indigenous communities like the Waorani, Kichwa, Shuar and those in voluntary isolation, the Tagaeri and the Taromenane, the world “Yasuni” means a magical “sacred ground,” a unique place that could never be discovered entirely. This enormous gift from the universe is located in Ecuador.
Exhibiting these photographs raises the public’s awareness about the importance of protecting the park and preserving it for generations to come.
