The only French photographer with an exclusive contract with Life Magazine from 1957 until 1972 when it ceased being a weekly magazine, Pierre Boulat was passionate from a very young age about photography and entered the Ecole Nationale de Photographie when he was sixteen. At the end of the Second World War, he collaborated with the international press and quickly became one of the well known photo reporters of his generation. Pierre Boulat has contributed in making icons of famous figures from fashion and cinema with a certain delicacy. Moving away from the mystification of these established or blossoming stars, he would focus on a sincere, intimate, amicable look. A Life of Love, a retrospective of photographs by Pierre Boulat (1924-1998) is currently on view at Galerie Cinema in Paris.
Lover of the 7th art and an informed cinephile, he rubbed shoulders during his reportages with the biggest figures of the time: Agnès Varda and Jacques Demy, Maria Callas and Pier Paolo Pasolini, Brigitte Bardot, François Truffaut, Federico Fellini, Charlotte Rampling, Ryan O’Neal, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Pierre Léaud… His passion for the cinema brought him to collaborate with director Stanley Kubrick for whom he created photographs that served as the set in the first scenes of the cult film 2001, A Space Odyssey. Pierre Boulat was also close to the fashion world, above all Yves Saint Laurent, which he followed for years. This relationship left mythic shots which inspired an entire generation of artists. He led a photographic life made of love and passion that Galerie Cinema is showcasing with this exhibition. In the projection room, Nicolas Saada, a filmmaker, made a video installation where he speaks to us about the strong bond that united Pierre Boulat to cinema. A beautiful epilogue.
