Sad news: photograph, the guide to New York’s photographic galleries founded in 1988 by Bill Mindlin, is closing. This is one of the increasingly frequent signs of the incredible transformation that photography will once again experience!

It is with heavy hearts and tremendous gratitude for all of your support that we are announcing that photograph magazine is closing. The magazine has been a labor of love for our small and dedicated staff, but we were not able to fully recover from the challenges presented by the COVID pandemic. photograph was founded in 1988 by Bill Mindlin, who saw the need for a listings guide to photography shows across New York City. That mimeographed list evolved over the years into a beautifully designed and printed magazine – as well as an elegant website and digital publication and a weekly newsletter – that has covered countless talented photographers, committed curators, dealers, book publishers, and exhibitions and that has published the work of many, many gifted and knowledgeable writers. Many thanks to all of them, but especially to our longstanding contributors Vince Aletti, Lyle Rexer, Elisabeth Biondi, and Sarah Schmerler, and to frequent contributors including Sarah Boxer, Stephanie Cash, Mark Alice Durant, Jason Foumberg, Stephen Frailey, Glen Helfand, Michelle Lamuniere, Joanna Lehan, Eric Miles, Leah Ollman, Jake Romm, Roula Seikaly, Jordan G. Teicher, and Catherine Wagley.
Thanks as well to our talented and dedicated employees over the years: Giada De Agostinis, John Figueroa, Mary Ann Livchak, Jess Mackta, Dolly Meieran, Ed Miliano, Laura Miller, Julia Schwartz, Fiora Watts, Melissa Welikson, and founding editor Ava C. Swartz.
And thanks to the many institutions – museums, galleries, private dealers, auction houses, and nonprofits – who advertised with us and supported us over the years.
With appreciation as well to our skilled printers, AGW Lithography (Conrad Gleber, Robert Warhover, Will Abrams, and David Zilkowski), HighRoad Press, and Meridian Printing (Adam Freedman, Daniel Frank, and Steven Lee), and to Chris Elliott, Kyle Shike, and the folks at Surface Impression, who helped us develop our website and digital publication.
It has been our honor and pleasure to produce photograph magazine and to play an integral part in the vibrant photography community.
With thanks,
Anthony Beale, Publisher
