The celebrated collection Photo Poche, founded in 1982 by Robert Delpire and published by Actes Sud presents its latest release, an homage to David Seymour, better known as Chim.
In 1947, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour founded the Magnum photo agency. But Chim’s contributions to the development of photorjournalism remain relatively unknown. Number 138 in the Photo Poche collection retraces David Seymour’s career with texts by Carole Naggar and more than 80 photographs.
A Polish Jew born in 1911, David Seymour fled the rise of Nazism , moving first to Paris when he was twenty and then to the United States in 1939. This personal experience of exodus and deracination, explains perhaps the high sensitivity of his work, most visible in his 1947 series for UNICEF, where he documented the suffering of children in the aftermath of the devastating, continent-wide war. He died at 45, gunned down in Egypt during the final days of the Suez Crisis.
