The seventh edition of the Photo Levallois festival opened on October 10th. This year’s program featured five exhibitions at three different locations. The centerpiece is Evidence, an exhibition dedicated to the artist duo Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel. This photo series, on display at the Salons d’Honneurs at the Levallois Hôtel de Ville (although no longer), is considered a precursor to the new practice of conceptual photography.
Since the mid seventies, Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel, the major American artist duo masterly contributed to the dialogue between photography and conceptual art. The exhibition, that will takes place from october 10th to october 25th, will present two bodies of works, including Evidence, a series of improbable photographs from archival collections that find a second life by being extracted from their original context. Since its publication in 1977, Evidence, has been influential for generations of artists that are aware of the unseizable nature of the photographic image.
