Peter Lindbergh first saw on the big screen a feature film dedicated to his work at the World Premiere of the 69th Berlinale on February 15th during the Berlin International Film Festival.
Berlin viewers who had been able to book their place at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and the Cubix 8 in Berlin for two sold-out screenings on February 15 and 16, discovered that the last of the lords of fashion photography is not only the one we believe. Jean-Michel Vecchiet, the French documentary director signs “Peter Lindbergh- Women’s Stories”. He wanted this biographical film as a psychoanalytic film whose fundamental question would be: how Peter Brodbeck, a child born during the Second World War, son of Germans in a subjugated Poland became Peter Lindbergh, the recognized photographer, portraitist of the most beautiful women in the world. And we discover during the movie that this path to beauty starts in the ruins of a destroyed Germany.
A rare documentary on the life of an artist by an artist where the sound of Nazi boots, the roar of bombers, the deafening din of factories alongside the dry clinking of the camera, punctuated by the encouragement of the photographer to the model in these mysterious ballets from which emerged the iconic images of the last thirty years when glossy paper was king. In front of the work, one always asks the question of the backstage. The mystery of creation Jean-Michel Vecchiet calls in women’s voices to understand: old Polish women from Leszno, the hometown, sister, wives, editors, muses. But also Van Gogh and his poetic writings.
The film sets down its singularity at the onset of the first images and surprises with a mise en abime on the act of creation. The author embarks us with him and recreates the enigmatic thread of the heroic stuff of his sacred monster. Jean-Michel Vecchiet and Peter Lindbergh. A duo of artists, the first filming the second photographing the most beautiful women in the world for popular magazines within a few tens of centimeters of each other, over more than twenty years.
This intimacy gives a poetic film and an exceptional document behind the scenes of a work, on the extraordinary energy of a young artist from Germany in the 60s seeking his poetic voice, snapping up by the promises, of the world of fashion. This is how Peter Brodbeck became Peter Lindbergh a huge photographer of his time beyond fashion images and celebrity portraits.
