Between March 9 and June 10, 2018, the Cité de la Mode et du Design in Paris showcases the work of the iconic Swiss fashion photographer Peter Knapp, featuring over 100 photographs, for the most never exhibited before. This is the fifth part of the special edition of the Eye of Photography devoted to this trailblazing artist.
Borrowing the vocabulary of the aesthetic avant-gardes and the cinema, Peter Knapp challenged the codes of fashion photography in the 1960s. He appropriated and subverted new forms of contemporary art, summoning minimalism, expressionist painting, narrative art, etc. These weren’t mere references, but ways of inscribing fashion in modernity. The fashion magazine became the vehicle best suited to these changes.
