Between March 9 and June 10, 2018, the Cité de la Mode et du Design in Paris showcases the work of the iconic Swiss fashion photographer Peter Knapp, featuring over 100 photographs, for the most never exhibited before. This is the second part of the special edition of the Eye of Photography devoted to this trailblazing artist.
Between the minimalism of black-and-white and saturated colors, the world of Peter Knapp is a construction, a desire to formalize a certain idea of happiness. Using a few snippets of reality, the photographer sculpts a world he well knows is an illusion. The artist’s resources are not limited to his camera, equipment, or lighting. They also include a set of rules imposed by his eye and honed by his knowledge of art and aesthetics. With a wealth of experience and know-how, Peter Knapp anticipates the power of the image. His vision is never out of sync with his practice or even with common sense. He manages to both amplify the model and valorize the piece of clothing or the accessory. But beyond that, his interest is focused on the originality of narrative forms: a creative life punctuated by varied scenarios, yet always marked by the same unifying vision.
