The Elk Hunter
United States, 2013

By authorising growth hormones and vaccinations in industrial livestock farming, the Food and Drug Administration has enabled a plentiful supply of cheap, readily available meat. Along with the deep transformations in the American industry during the 20th century, the US has also witnessed the emergence of local initiatives to produce and consume differently. The aim is to by-pass the mass market and rediscover the taste of real food.

Ben is one of those Americans striving to know and control the origins of their food.
He lives in the suburbs of Salt Lake City where he aspire to a self-sufficient lifestyle.  With his wife, Katherine, they raise their own chickens, geese and ducks and grows their own vegetables. A few years ago, Ben decided to cover at least a part of their meat consumption too, so he set off for the mountains of Utah to hunt elks..

Brice Portolano was born in 1991 in Paris.
